YES, BUT WHAT DO YOU SOUND LIKE?

People often ask us to describe our sound. Other people tell us what we sound like after shows. In an attempt to bring these people together (and avoid having to give a straight answer ourselves), here’s a list of what other people have told us we sound like.

The Fall

MX-80 Sound

Mission of Burma

Pere Ubu

“Totally early SST, man. It reminded me of when I was a kid, skating the half pipe.”

Clinic

Bastro (Jarred Hand, aesthetic technician and guitar god)

Big Black

“Sonic Youth meets Ape Has Killed Ape” – Your Imaginary Friend

“You know that movie, with the couple who… it had something to do with that director who died, the guy who made that movie with Peter Sellers… Anyway, something happens, and they go – or one of them goes to a party… and what’s that movie called?”
“Are you thinking of Eyes Wide Shut?”
“Yeah, that’s it – Eyes Wide Shut. Your music reminds me of the music from the party scene in there.”
“… …!”
[A Love Supreme is playing in the background]
“You also sound like you listen to a lot of this kind of music.”
(Colin’s mother-in-law)

“You guys should totally be on Dischord. You totally sound like a classic Dischord band. TOTALLY.”

Firehose

Early Gang of Four

D: “So what do you call this kind of music?”
J: “Oh… I don’t know.”
D: “Is it, like, prog punk?”
J: “Sure I guess.”

“Think Minutemen, the Fall, and other punk-inspired weirdo bands.” – Punk Planet

"Your guitar tone is really sarcastic. I mean, if a guitar tone can be sarcastic, yours is."

I really love the way you are channeling the best of early Zappa/with a touch of the old Beefheart.

Ovipositor reminds me of the Flaming Lips, before they got poppy.

Disparate? Oh hell yeah. Accurate? Uh… Either our genius is uncategorizable or our scope is massive. Or else people leave the room when we start playing and only talk to us because it’s easier than giving spare change.

On an interesting side note, google has established that all roads lead to Ovipositor.
